From its initial meeting held in June 2014 Richmond’s 2018 bicentennial preparations have made significant progress. At that time the Richmond Village Association convened an open meeting which included the local Lions and Kiwanis clubs, Goulbourn Museum, Richmond Agricultural Society, Richmond Legion, Goulbourn Historical Society and others. It was agreed that a unified Organizing Committee would be established to coordinate, raise funds, promote and create a 2018 celebratory event to match the historical achievement of a 200 year birthday.
In the fall of 2015 and after several early meetings it was agreed to bring in Cydney Green to head the 2018 Organizing Committee because of her experience in chairing Richmond’s 175th Anniversary. Cydney immediately assembled a dedicated core of volunteers who created a vision and plan, a marketing/funding strategy, opened a bank account, commissioned an official logo and theme song, created website/social media platforms, ordered memorabilia, created a list of activities/events and then started executing.
The execution began with the official launch on April 30, 2016 followed by fund raising events which included One Fabulous Garage Sale, Car-tastrophy, Taste of Richmond, Barn Dance, Golf Tournament and participation in the Richmond Fair. These will be followed by a New Year’s Gala, Family Fun Day Skating Party, a Margaritaville Dance and many other events. See: http://richmond200.ca/2018-
Along the way many grassroots fundraising initiatives were also held and included card playing tournaments, BBQ’s, a swim-a-thon, street banners, donations from wine bottle sales, crocheted fox doll sales, church event donations and several anonymous cash donations. New fundraising grass root initiatives are always needed and welcomed.
So with less than nine months remaining before our big weekend party on June 15-17, 2018 where do we stand? Financially, we have raised over $100,000 and are working toward our new target of $150,000.
We need more volunteers to sign up and commit to our June weekend event and we need the community to visit our merchandise store at Royal Lepage Team Realty office at 3441 McBean Street, Richmond to purchase memorabilia. And if you would like more information or have questions please attend the Richmond Village Association Open Meeting on Wednesday Oct 18, 8pm at the Richmond arena where Cydney and the Organizing Committee will be presenting a detailed status update.
Finally, we wish to thank our committee members, volunteers, sponsors, supporters and everyone who has participated in Richmond’s 200th Anniversary. We encourage and invite everyone to join in the celebration.
